FAQ: Fibby: The Hero-Like Swimming Aid With A Mission
For the most up-to-date information about the status of our project, check our project updates on Kickstarter!

Why do they still need to continue wearing a Fibby if they can save themselves with and without a Fibby swimming aid after completing the course?

In & near the water your child should always wear a Fibby if he or she hasn’t passed swimming classes yet. Period.

We enable you to teach your child the fundamentals to save themselves at a really young age. Making them water safe does not relieve you of your own parental responsibility. On the contrary, you take on extra responsibility for giving them handles to save themselves, for when things go wrong.

Let them only move without swimming aids at the waterside after passing official swimming classes, years later.

Why do I still always have to stay with my child, even though they can save themselves even without a fibby swimming aid after completing the Fibby course?

In & near the water you should always be with your child. Period.

Making them water safe does not relieve you of your own parental responsibility. On the contrary, you take on extra responsibility for giving them handles to save themselves, for when things go wrong during that 1 second you look the other way!

Is the Fibby swimming aid designed according to international certification standards?

Yes, and according to our even stricter internal requirements.

Can I always use Fibby in the water?

Fibby is designed as a flotation aid when learning to swim. As swimming devices are not life protectors, they should only be used in swimming pools and other water situations free from currents, tides and waves.

You're saying I can make my child 'water safe' at the age of two?

Sounds too good to be true? Side note: in general, we see that children at the age of 2 become water safe faster with Fibby. The reason: as children get older, they become more aware of danger, so they take more time to become familiar with water and letting go of your hand.

Often this fear is a result of your parental concerns about drowning, something you have rightly warned your child about all his/her life. Even though it doesn’t always feel that way, your child remembers that ;-).

I don’t have any background in teaching swimming. Can I really teach my child the fundamentals of saving themselves by playing and making fun?

Yes, you can! Our ancestors did it too. When we worked together with the Dutch Don’t Drown Foundation to develop the method, the question wasn’t whether it could be done, but rather how to enable parents to make it happen.

With easy accessible videos and clear goals we did. All thanks to the core element of our method: playing. By playing children tend to learn faster if it’s easy and fun.

No matter what we say, you have to experience it for yourself. Already during the first session you will see your child improving and making steps. You’ll know how to motivate your child and why you’re doing it. Exactly these moments are stimulating.

What if my child does not instinctively start treading water?

This can have various causes: either your child can touch the bottom or you hold your child too tight. Although both are fine, you’re not encouraging your child’s independent propulsion.

Does your child remain motionless after intensive training? Let us know right away! Your child would be the first one to do so and we’re curious to find out why.

How fast will my child learn getting out of the water solo and without Fibby?

We simply don’t know. You should not aim for speed, since pressure tends to slow down. As long as you have fun, the rest will come naturally.

If it takes longer than you expected (‘long’ is just your qualification), the worst that happens is that you have had more fun with your child in the water ;-).

[How] does Fibby connect to regular swimming certificates/ the Dutch Zwem A-B-C?

Perfectly. With Fibby and ‘you’ as their most trusted playmate, children learn the essentials to save themselves from the age of two. Just by making fun, you make them ‘water safe’ and more free in the water. You lay the foundation for when they learn professional swimming strokes such as the front crawl and breaststroke, which children are able to learn from 4-5 years old, depending on their physical development.

In each country, swimming education is organized differently (when organized at national scale). Most children are ready to take the A Diploma after an average of 48 hours of swimming lessons. Before children are ready to learn professional swimming strokes, they first learn to become careless in the water and water safe. If you have been to the water with your child multiple times, your child will most likely go through the steps faster. We haven’t conducted research yet, but we plan to.

Can children take Fibby off on their own?

What size is Fibby?

Width: 19 cm / 7.5 inch Length: 27cm / 10.6 inch Height: 16cm / 6.3 inch

What does Fibby weigh?

259 grams

From which materials is Fibby made?

The orange buoyancy is made of EPP (expanded polypropylene). The biggest benefit of EPP is its lightness or buoyancy, since 90% is made out of air. Unlike expanded polystyrene (EPS), known from packaging, EPP is a lot harder, so it doesn’t crack or tear like expanded polystyrene.

Fibby’s harness is made from neoprene, something that’s commonly used in wetsuits. Thanks to its 50% stretch, it feels like a second skin. You only have to adjust the strap for ergonomic fit.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
